Case #368 — Rolex Explorer 39MM MK1 “T-Rex” Ref. 214270
Status: Active Investigation
Condition: Excellent Pre-Owned
Scope: Box and Card
Year: 2014
The Rolex Explorer Ref. 214270 is one of the most important modern Explorer references, and the early MK1 version has developed a particularly strong following among collectors. At 39mm, it is the only modern Explorer to sit between the classic 36mm proportions of earlier models and the broader sizing trends of the 2010s, giving it a distinct place in the Explorer lineage. This early version is especially notable for its original MK1 dial and handset configuration.
What makes this example especially compelling is the MK1 “T-Rex” dial. Collectors use that nickname for the early 214270 because of its shorter handset and the non-luminous 3-6-9 numerals, details that were later revised on the MK2 version. That early configuration gives the watch a more specific collector identity and helps separate it from later 214270 examples.
This example dates to 2014 and is presented in excellent pre-owned condition. Overall, it shows only light wear consistent with careful use. It includes box and card and is currently sized to fit approximately a 7.25-inch wrist.

The Explorer has always been one of Rolex’s purest models — simple, legible, and built around the idea of practical durability rather than excess. The 214270 carried that formula into a larger 39mm case for the first time, creating a reference that still feels unmistakably like an Explorer but occupies a unique place within the family’s history.
That matters because the 214270 is not just another iteration. It is the Explorer reference that broke from the brand’s long-running 36mm formula, and the MK1 version preserves the earliest expression of that shift. For many collectors, that is exactly what makes it interesting.
The appeal here is rooted in version-specific detail. The early MK1 dial is the story, and that is what gives this watch its collector edge over a standard later 214270. The shorter hands and non-luminous 3-6-9 numerals were only part of the earlier run, which means this watch carries a more specific identity than the revised MK2 examples that followed.
The result is a watch that works on two levels: it is a highly wearable modern Rolex sports watch, and it is also a version that collectors actively distinguish and seek out. With box and card, a 2014 date, and strong overall presentation, it sits in a very attractive lane for someone who wants an Explorer with more nuance than the standard reference path.
The Explorer is less about flash and more about purity. Its appeal comes from proportion, discretion, and the fact that it remains one of Rolex’s cleanest sport-watch designs. The MK1 214270 adds another layer to that appeal by being a reference collectors recognize as a transitional and version-specific modern Explorer.
“Recovered as a 2014 Rolex Explorer 39MM MK1 ‘T-Rex’ Ref. 214270. Box and card. Excellent pre-owned condition overall. Sized to approximately a 7.25-inch wrist.”
Case #368 delivers one of the most collectible modern Explorer variations in the 39mm family. With its early MK1 “T-Rex” dial, box and card, and excellent overall presentation, this is a very attractive example of a reference that stands apart from the later 214270 executions.
