COLLECTOR CASE FILE #002

The Watch You Wear Most

Some watches spend more time in the box than on the wrist. Others become the ones we reach for without even thinking.

Maybe it is the comfort, the versatility, the memories attached to it, or simply the way it feels like your watch.

Collector Case File #002 asks our community:

Which watch in your collection gets the most wrist time and why?

The stories below are about the watches that keep earning their place on the wrist.

Opening Statements

Every investigation begins somewhere. Before opening the case to our community, Tim and Joe answer this month's question.

A watch that gets serious wrist time has to do three things well: wear easily, work effortlessly, and look right almost anywhere.

My white-dial Rolex Daytona 116520 checks every box. No date complication means wind it, set it, and go. It looks just as good with my usual jeans and black T-shirt as it does slipping under a suit cuff for all those board meetings we don’t have here at Baker Street Timepieces.

And then there’s the presence. The Daytona is an icon among Rolex sports watches, instantly recognizable and, yes, just a little bit of a show-off.

If you know me, you know that matters.

The watch in my collection that gets the most wrist time is easily my “Summer Blue” Aqua Terra. The dial is absolutely stunning and has become a summer staple for me. I own both the matching rubber strap and the steel bracelet, which gives the watch incredible versatility—it looks just as natural with shorts and a T-shirt as it does sneaking under a dress cuff. Between the water resistance and dive bezel-free design, it has true GADA watch appeal—and it delivers. It may not be a traditional dress watch, but the highly polished surfaces give it that flashy, jewelry-like presence when the occasion calls for it.

More than almost any other watch I own, the dial sparks conversations. People notice it, ask about it, and suddenly I have an excuse to talk about my love of watches—which is always a win. One of my favorite details, though, is something most people never see: the Poseidon engraving on the caseback. It’s a small touch, but it makes me smile every time I take the watch off.

The Rolex Datejust 36, Ref. 126234.

This was my first automatic luxury watch, and initially, I really dug my heels in about buying a watch of that caliber. I don’t fuss over the things I own. I use them, and I was afraid I’d be too hard on it. I also just didn’t think a Rolex was really my style.

My ears perked up when my husband described it as a “tool watch,” something meant to be worn, not babied. What finally convinced me was watching a woman I knew run her restaurant, always hands-on and always wearing her Rolex. I realized, Oh. You can just wear the thing.

Eventually, I said yes. I chose the black dial with the signature fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet. It suits me, but more importantly, it suits my life. It’s elevated utility. Beautiful enough to feel special, but practical enough that I keep it within easy reach, put it on without thinking, and go about my day.

Mondaine Swiss Railroad

Having 88 year old eyes, clarity and comfort come first. I don’t wear bracelets now: leather or nato. I have a Damasko from Joe, number three son. German like half of me. Clear yes. Full lime dial all on a mfr blue silicon strap. Iced steel. Just right all around.

I also often wear my Swiss railroad station watch. So clear.

I would say the BB54 Blue I got from you guys. I’ve worn that a lot lately.

Seiko snr501 - beautiful, reliable, classy.

My Rolex Explorer II 216570. Is it one of those 'if you know, you know' watches that goes under the radar, but is extremely comfortable on a rubber B strap.

Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical (H69439363).

It fits my wrist perfectly and comfortably, and it hits all the romantic things I like in a watch, including mechanical winding so it feels like we're working together in a way that automatics, and quartz/solars don't.

My most worn watch is a Breitling SuperOcean Heritage daydate chronograph Ocean Conservancy limited edition. I bought it as a 50th birthday present to myself. It works as well with jeans and a t-shirt as it does a dress shirk & khakis, and since I wear a lot of blue, it matches well.
