πŸ”Ž Case Notes

Strip the date window off a Seamaster Diver 300M, replace the familiar ceramic bezel with raw grade 5 titanium, and you get something that looks meaningfully different from the thousands of Diver 300Ms in circulation. That is the Nekton Edition, and it is one of the more quietly interesting detours the modern Diver 300M line has taken.

The differentiator is immediately visible at the bezel. Rather than ceramic with a white enamel diving scale, the unidirectional rotating bezel appears in grade 5 titanium with a laser-ablated diving scale in positive relief β€” numerals and markers you can feel with a fingertip, catching light in a way a flat printed bezel never does. The grade 5 titanium sits alongside the stainless steel case without an obvious colour break; grade 2 titanium would read considerably darker.

The dial follows the same logic. It is laser-ablated black ceramic [ZrO2], matte finished with the Seamaster wave pattern polished in positive relief β€” the familiar motif rendered in relief rather than engraved, and with no date aperture interrupting the symmetry. Faceted hands and indexes are filled with white Super-LumiNova against the black dial. The solid caseback is embossed with the Nekton submarine medallion and oriented using Omega's NAIAD LOCK system.

This example is a 2021 watch on the steel bracelet, graded Very Good Pre-Owned. There is minor wear visible on the case sides and flanks, consistent with genuine wrist time. The bezel and crystal are clean. It is presently sized to fit an approximately 7ΒΎ-inch wrist and arrives with Box, Papers, and Cards.

🌟 Collector Provenance

The Diver 300M has been the Seamaster's commercial backbone since 1993, and the 2018 redesign β€” larger 42 mm case, ceramic dial with laser-cut waves, Master Chronometer calibre β€” reset the entire family. The Nekton Edition arrived in 2020 as a deliberate variation on that platform rather than a repackaging of it. Two versions were offered: one on an integrated black rubber strap with polished-brushed buckle, and one on the stainless steel bracelet. This is the bracelet reference.

Two departures matter to collectors. The first is the movement: unlike the standard Diver 300M with its date at six o'clock, the Nekton Edition is time-only, powered by Calibre 8806 β€” the no-date version of the 8800, with Co-Axial escapement, METAS certification, free-sprung balance with silicon hairspring and magnetic resistance in excess of 15,000 gauss. Date-free Diver 300Ms are not the norm in the modern line, and for buyers who prefer an uninterrupted dial, the options are limited.

The second is the bezel. Omega has committed heavily to ceramic bezels across the Seamaster range, which makes an exposed titanium bezel with relief markings a genuine outlier within the current catalogue. Commentary at launch singled out precisely this combination β€” the matte ceramic dial, the titanium relief bezel and the absence of a date β€” as what set the watch apart, with the matte dial, titanium positive relief bezel and no-date display described as a winning combination.

The other consequence of the Nekton treatment is the caseback. The standard modern Diver 300M shows its movement through sapphire; this one does not. The caseback is embossed with the Nekton submarine medallion β€” a closed back on a modern Omega diver, which is itself an uncommon configuration in this generation.

🌟 Collaboration Provenance

The edition exists because of a partnership, not a marketing exercise. Omega is a partner to Nekton, a not-for-profit research foundation committed to the protection and management of the world's oceans, and Nekton works in collaboration with the University of Oxford. The 42 mm Diver 300M was released in support of that partnership.

That origin is stamped into the watch rather than printed on the box. The submarine medallion on the caseback references submersible work rather than brand imagery, and the dial and bezel treatments were developed specifically for this edition. The practical point for a collector is that the design choices are traceable to a reason β€” which is not always true of special editions.

🧾 From the Case File

On the wrist, this is a Diver 300M that behaves slightly differently from its siblings. At 42 mm across, 13.66 mm thick and 49.90 mm lug-to-lug, the footprint is standard for the generation, but the titanium bezel changes the character of the watch in daylight β€” matte and tactile where ceramic is glassy. Reviewers wearing it at launch found the 42 mm size well suited to a 19 cm wrist, which sits close to the roughly 7ΒΎ-inch fit this example is currently set to.

Practically, the no-date dial removes the one daily chore a date-equipped automatic imposes: after a few days off the wrist you simply set the time and go. The calibre 8806 underneath is the current-generation Omega movement in its purest form β€” METAS-certified with 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance and roughly 55 hours of power reserve, meaning a watch left off from Friday evening will usually still be running Sunday morning.

The bracelet reference is the more versatile of the two Nekton variants. Omega positioned the brushed-and-polished steel bracelet as giving the watch a dressier range while keeping its sporting character β€” and unlike the integrated rubber version, the 20 mm lugs here accept conventional strap changes.

Condition-wise, this is an honest example rather than a safe-queen. The minor wear on the case sides and flanks is the sort of thing a Diver 300M accumulates through ordinary use; the surfaces that dominate the watch visually β€” bezel and crystal β€” are clean. The accompanying Box, Papers, and Cards keep the file complete. Note that Omega's factory warranty on this generation runs five years from the card's activation date, so on a 2021 example that period is at or near its conclusion, subject to the exact activation date and Omega's warranty terms.

πŸ—οΈ BST Verdict

A Diver 300M for buyers who have looked at the standard ceramic-bezel version and wanted something with more texture and fewer apertures. The grade 5 titanium relief bezel, the laser-ablated ceramic wave dial and the date-free 8806 make this the most visually distinct branch of the current Seamaster diver family.

Wearing honestly at 42 mm with minor case-side marks, clean bezel and crystal, sized for an approximately 7ΒΎ-inch wrist, and complete with Box, Papers, and Cards β€” a special edition with an actual reason for existing, on the more adaptable of its two factory configurations.

πŸ‘‰ Every case deserves a closer look.
