Bell & Ross built its reputation on a single, uncompromising idea: take the instrument panel of an aircraft and strap it to a wrist. The BR 03 Diver takes that square-cased language somewhere it was never obviously meant to go — underwater — and makes a convincing argument for it. The BR 03 Diver is the first square diving watch, and it meets the international standards of ISO 6425 governing the designation "diving watch."

This is the all-black steel execution, and it is the most elemental of the line. The 42 mm polished-satin steel case carries a unidirectional rotating steel bezel with a 60-minute scale set in black ceramic, with a detailed 15-minute scale, a screw-down crown with full guards, and a solid caseback secured by four screws — the four exposed screws being the signature that has defined the brand since the BR 01. The BR 03 Diver arrived as a genuine oddity: a square dive watch in a category governed by round conventions and a standard — ISO 6425 — that cares nothing for aesthetics and everything for legibility, bezel security, shock resistance and water integrity. Bell & Ross engineered the square case to clear that bar rather than merely gesture at diving, and that is the reason the model earned a serious audience rather than a novelty one.

This reference belongs to the updated generation rather than the original run. For the line's seventh anniversary in 2024, the design was modified for a more contemporary look and the movement fine-tuned: the bezels gained a ceramic insert for greater resistance and durability, the movement was revised to extend the power reserve to 54 hours, a new typeface and new hands improved legibility, and a new strap was designed to fit a wider range of wrists. The practical upshot is that a watch bought today on the secondary market in this reference is the more resolved version of the concept — a meaningful distinction when earlier BR 03 Divers remain widely available.

Within the refreshed family, the steel-cased models sit as the reference point. Available in three versions, the BR 03 Diver Steel offers optimal legibility thanks to its ceramic bezel matching the dial and its enhanced hands and indices. The steel options were offered with black, blue and white dials, while the ceramic models took a matte black or pale blue full-lume dial. Bell & Ross's founding brief is not marketing varnish. In 1992, a team of designers and specialists in aircraft and space controls set out to create watches suited for professional use — and the square-case-within-a-circle layout is a direct transcription of an aviation instrument face into a wristwatch, not a styling exercise applied afterwards.

What makes the Diver interesting as a design object is how little the brand compromised to make the geometry work in water. The bezel remains round and unidirectional, so the timing action feels conventional; the square case simply frames it, and the flat flanks give the rotating edge more purchase than a comparable round diver usually offers. Relative to earlier BR series models, the Diver introduced the screw-down crown and unidirectional rotating bezel that the dive specification demands.

The dial does the rest of the work. Skeletonised applique indices and hands filled with white Super-LumiNova, a "Baignoire-style" applique index and an arrow-shaped hour hand give the black face a hierarchy that resolves instantly in poor light — which is, after all, the entire point of the instrument it is imitating.
