Burgundy on black is the combination that started the modern Black Bay story, and this is that combination brought fully up to date. The original Black Bay launched in 2012 with a burgundy bezel, received the Manufacture Calibre treatment in 2016, and this third evolution points toward the aesthetic and technical direction of the line. The visual language is familiar; almost everything underneath it has moved on.

The differentiator here is certification. This generation runs the Manufacture Calibre MT5602-U, certified by both COSC and METAS, with the Black Bay having passed the testing required for Master Chronometer status. That standard assesses the fully cased watch rather than the loose movement — precision across temperatures and states of wind, plus resistance to magnetic fields and water ingress.

Case detective work on this example: a 2024 watch in Excellent Pre-Owned condition, on the three-link Oyster-style steel bracelet with Tudor's "T-fit" clasp, sized to fit an approximately 7¾-inch wrist. No condition flaws were recorded during our physical inspection. 🌟 Collector Provenance

The Black Bay's family tree is unusually easy to read. The 2012 original established the silhouette and the burgundy bezel; 2016 brought the in-house Manufacture Calibre; and this reference is the third act. It keeps the "Original" Black Bay proportions — a 41 mm steel case, now with a thinner profile — and the 60-minute unidirectional bezel.

The revisions are the sort collectors argue about happily. The casebands were slimmed, the bezel fluting made more pronounced, and the crown now sits closer to the case. The handset changed too, with a lollipop seconds hand and pencil minute hand joining the snowflake hour hand. Reviewers coming from earlier Black Bays have noted the restrained lug-to-lug, slightly reduced case height and mid-case sculpted to curve toward the wrist.

Movement-wise, the MT5602-U matters more than its suffix suggests. It is the METAS-certified variant of the MT5602 family, first seen in the ceramic Black Bay 41 and then in this red-bezel gilt-dial version — a standard that had been associated predominantly with Omega. Seeing it applied across Tudor's flagship diver is a meaningful marker in the brand's recent history.

🌟 Design Provenance

Two design decisions define this watch's face. The first is the bezel material: an anodised aluminium insert, an authentically old-school choice in an era of ceramic, in the burgundy tone that has been the Black Bay's signature since the beginning. Aluminium ages, catches light and reads warmer than ceramic — which is precisely the point.

The second is the gilt treatment. The gold-tone dial elements alongside that bezel produce a dial that is both highly legible and visually distinctive. Set against the monochrome sibling reference in the same case — which strips out the gilt and the colour entirely — this red-and-gilt configuration is the one that carries the heritage argument. The burgundy bezel and black dial reference Tudor's earliest dive watches, while the snowflake hands and gilt accents supply the heritage character the Black Bay is known for.

🧾 From the Case File

On the wrist, this is the most wearable version of the 41 mm Black Bay yet built. The previous generation wore larger with more visual mass; the new case is thinner with less prominent lugs, so it wears somewhat smaller. If the earlier Black Bay was a size too aggressive for you, this generation deserves a second look before you rule it out.

The practical advantages stack up quickly. The T-fit clasp allows on-the-fly micro-adjustment — genuinely useful in summer heat or over a shirt cuff — and it is fitted here to the three-link Oyster-style bracelet, the more understated of the two steel options. Seventy hours of power reserve means it survives a weekend off the wrist, and 200 m of water resistance covers any realistic use.

Against buying new: this is a 2024 example in Excellent Pre-Owned condition, complete with Box, Papers, and Cards, and it should still carry a substantial portion of Tudor's five-year transferable guarantee. It measured on-target during our inspection, and it is already sized for an approximately 7¾-inch wrist.
