π Case Notes
Most Black Bays announce themselves. This one does the opposite. The Black Bay Dark takes the same 41 mm diver case, the same domed dial and the same oversized crown that made the line a modern classic, and buries all of it under a matte black PVD coating β case, bezel, bracelet and caseback included. Within the Black Bay collection it remains the outlier, with matte black PVD applied across both case and metal bracelet for a notably reserved, sleek appearance.
The interesting detail on this particular example is the coating itself. PVD is a surface treatment, not a bulk material, and when it wears through, bright steel shows underneath β any scratch that removes the coating reveals the stainless steel below, which is why a PVD-coated watch tends to age less gracefully than an all-steel counterpart. On inspection, this 2018 example shows only very minor wear to the PVD, which is uncommon for this type of finish and points to a watch that was worn with real care. The dial, bezel and crystal are all clean.
Underneath the blackout treatment sits Tudor's own Manufacture Calibre MT5602, a no-date automatic with COSC chronometer certification, a bidirectional rotor system, a variable inertia balance with micro-adjustment by screw, and a non-magnetic silicon balance spring. Power reserve is 70 hours.
Supplied as Box, Papers, and Cards, on its black PVD-coated Oyster bracelet with butterfly clasp, currently sized to fit an approximately 7ΒΎ-inch wrist.

π Collector Provenance
The Black Bay Dark arrived in a specific and important window for the brand. Across 2016 and 2017, Tudor rolled its Manufacture movements out through its sports watches and broadened the Black Bay diver line. The Dark itself was released in 2016, which places it among the first wave of Black Bays to carry a Tudor-built calibre rather than a sourced Γ©bauche β the single biggest shift in the brand's modern identity.
The MT5602 was not a generic in-house badge. Tudor developed the MT5602 specifically for the Black Bay and Black Bay Dark, displaying hours, minutes and seconds, and it is a genuine no-date three-hander rather than a date movement with the window omitted. That matters to collectors who care about symmetry: the dial is uninterrupted, with no phantom date position and no cyclops on the crystal.
This reference is also the discontinued one. Tudor's later reorganisation of the Black Bay family around the 58 and the updated Black Bay 41 means the 79230-series case β with its distinctive rivet-style bracelet lugs, faux-rivet detailing and tall shoulders β now reads as a defined generation rather than a current catalogue item. The Dark is the version of that generation that is least frequently encountered in genuinely well-kept condition, precisely because the coating records careless ownership so honestly.
π Design Provenance
The Black Bay's design language is assembled from real Tudor history rather than invented nostalgia. The prominent winding crown comes from the famous 7924 reference of 1958, known as the Big Crown, while the angular Snowflake hands were borrowed from Tudor watches issued to the French national navy in the 1970s.
What the Dark does is strip colour out of that vocabulary entirely. The red bezel triangle and the red depth marking above six o'clock are the only interruptions to an otherwise monochrome watch, and against matte black they register far more sharply than they do on the steel versions. The bezel carries a black aluminium ring with a light-toned diving scale and a luminous dot within the red triangle at 12 o'clock.
The result is a diver that behaves quite differently on the wrist to a standard Black Bay. Matte black flattens the case's brushed surfaces and reduces the visual mass of a 41 mm watch, while the Snowflake hour hand β a shape that only really works when there is enough dial to carry it β remains instantly legible. It is a design exercise that a lot of brands attempt with aftermarket coatings; this is the factory answer, executed on the correct case.
π§Ύ From the Case File
The practical case for this example is condition. A PVD watch is bought on the integrity of its finish, and this one has been carefully worn: very minor coating wear only, with a clean dial, clean bezel insert and clean crystal. Buyers who have shopped this reference will know how quickly bracelet centre links and clasp edges give a blacked-out Tudor away.
Day to day, the specification is unfussy in the best sense. Seventy hours of reserve means a watch left off on Friday is still running Monday morning. The silicon balance spring is non-magnetic, which is a real advantage around laptops, speakers and magnetic clasps. Water resistance is 200 metres β genuine diver capability, not decorative. There is no date to correct, ever.
At 41 mm on a 22 mm bracelet with a butterfly clasp, it wears as a substantial sports watch, currently sized to an approximately 7ΒΎ-inch wrist. The all-black treatment gives it a range that steel divers do not quite have: it disappears under a cuff, and it sits comfortably with a field jacket or a black strap swap.
Supplied with Box, Papers, and Cards, dated to 2018. Given the year, the original Tudor guarantee period has lapsed; this is a pre-owned watch sold on its documented configuration and inspected condition rather than on remaining factory cover.
ποΈ BST Verdict
A discontinued, first-generation Manufacture-movement Black Bay in the one finish that punishes careless owners β presented here with only very minor wear to the coating and clean dial, bezel and crystal.
For a buyer who wants the Black Bay silhouette without the steel-diver familiarity, and who understands why a well-kept PVD case is worth waiting for, this is the version of the story worth reading.
π Every case deserves a closer look.
