🔎 CASE NOTES

The Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind is not simply aviation-themed—it was engineered around an actual navigational problem. At the center of the design is Hamilton’s drift-angle calculator, a system of rotating scales that allows a pilot to calculate the effect of crosswinds on an aircraft’s course. Hamilton describes the X-Wind as the first watch to incorporate this capability, giving the model genuine technical substance behind its instrument-like appearance.

This limited-production version takes that technical platform even further. The reference was produced in only 1,999 numbered examples worldwide, with a layered 45mm case and dial architecture designed to separate the chronograph, calendar, and aviation-calculation functions visually. Inside is Hamilton’s H-21 automatic chronograph movement, delivering approximately 60 hours of power reserve.

Case #582 is individually numbered 1398 of 1999 and is presented in very good pre-owned condition. It includes its box, papers, and undated warranty card and is generously sized to accommodate a wrist of 8 inches or larger.

✈️ TECHNICAL FLIGHT CAPABILITY

This is where the X-Wind becomes considerably more interesting than a conventional pilot chronograph. Using its rotating inner scales, a pilot can determine the drift angle caused by crosswinds and compensate for the difference between an aircraft’s heading and its actual track across the ground. Hamilton designed separate crown controls specifically to operate this calculation system.

Add the automatic chronograph, day/date calendar, 60-hour reserve, and layered aviation-instrument dial, and the result is one of Hamilton’s most mechanically and functionally ambitious pilot watches.

🌟 COLLECTOR PROVENANCE

The numbered production run gives this X-Wind a very different collector profile from the standard Khaki Aviation chronographs. Only 1,999 examples were produced worldwide, with the individual edition number engraved on the watch. Contemporary Hamilton-authorized material specifically identifies this generation as a world-limited model and highlights the drift-angle calculator as its defining technical feature.

Case #582’s 1398/1999 numbering, strong condition, accompanying box and paperwork, and undated warranty card make it an especially interesting example for a collector who appreciates unusual mechanical tool watches rather than simply conventional chronographs.

🌟 CELEBRITY / SCREEN PROVENANCE

There is a particularly good connection for this exact limited-edition model. The Hamilton X-Wind H77766331 was worn by Michael Peña as astronaut Rick Martinez in The Martian. Contemporary Hamilton specialist documentation identifies this exact reference as Martinez’s watch in the film.

That is more significant than a general brand ambassador association: it connects this specific limited-production X-Wind configuration directly to one of Hamilton’s many notable film appearances.
