Every so often a watch arrives on the bench with two sets of fingerprints on it, and this is one of those files. The Top Time is Breitling's most misunderstood chronograph — never a pilot's instrument, never a diver's tool, but a deliberately youthful, deliberately affordable chronograph launched in 1964 for what the marketing men of the era called "men of action." It was the watch of scooters, sports cars, ski weekends and the early jet set, and it earned its permanent place in the record books when a Top Time ref. 2002 — modified with a Geiger counter by Q Branch — appeared on Sean Connery's wrist in *Thunderball*. For decades that history sat quietly in the vintage market while collectors chased Navitimers and Chronomats. Then Breitling, under Georges Kern, went back into the archive and started pulling the Top Time out again.

The Deus edition is the most interesting of those revivals because it isn't a straight reissue — it's a conversation. Deus Ex Machina, founded in Sydney in 2006, built its reputation on stripped-back custom motorcycles, surfboards and a general refusal to take luxury too seriously. Pairing that sensibility with a 1960s Breitling chronograph produces something rarer than either party could manage alone: a heritage chronograph with genuine counterculture credibility rather than the usual boardroom-approved "lifestyle" veneer. The Deus identity is applied with restraint — the case, proportions and bi-compax architecture remain faithfully Top Time, while the collaboration announces itself in the dial detailing and the caseback rather than shouting from the crown.

What makes this reference worth pursuing is that it sits in the sweet spot the modern market keeps asking for and rarely gets: a properly historic model line, a genuinely period-correct design language, a chronometer-grade automatic chronograph movement, and a 41 mm case that wears like something considerably older and more elegant than its spec sheet suggests. Collaboration watches tend to age badly. This one has aged well precisely because the underlying watch was good before anyone put a second logo on it.

⚙️ THE MOVEMENT DOSSIER

Beneath the caseback sits Breitling's Caliber 23, an automatic chronograph built on a proven Swiss base architecture with an integrated chronograph module — a configuration Breitling has used for decades precisely because it is serviceable, robust and slim enough to keep the case profile honest to the 1960s original. It is COSC-certified, which remains a non-negotiable across the Breitling catalogue and is worth more than most buyers credit: every Top Time leaving Grenchen has been through independent chronometric testing before it ever reaches a dealer's tray. Power reserve sits at roughly 42 hours, meaning a Friday-night removal will not survive to Monday morning — a period-appropriate inconvenience, if one is feeling generous.

The chronograph is actuated by pump pushers rather than the rectangular blocks of the modern Chronomat, another concession to fidelity. Actuation on this example is crisp, with clean start, stop and return-to-zero, and no register creep observed under inspection.

Deus Ex Machina collaborations occupy an unusual position in the pre-owned market. 🧵 STRAP, CLASP & WEARABILITY

The leather strap presents in genuinely strong condition — supple, uncracked, with no separation at the stitching and no significant stretch at the spring bar holes. The wear on this example has concentrated almost entirely at the clasp, which is consistent and expected: the clasp is the component that absorbs every daily open-and-close cycle and every desk-edge contact, and it is invariably the first surface to show its age. This is normal wear, honestly reported, and it is confined to the hardware rather than the leather itself.
