Case #666 — Tudor Ranger 39mm Black on Steel Ref. m79950-0001

Status: Available
Condition: Very Good Pre-Owned

Case Notes

The Ranger is Tudor stripped back to the essentials.

No rotating bezel. No date window. No polished center links. Just a matte black dial, oversized Arabic numerals, an arrow-shaped hour hand, and a fully satin-finished 39 mm steel case designed around legibility rather than decoration.

Tudor introduced this generation in 2022 to mark the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition, drawing on the brand’s long-standing idea of the expedition watch: robust, simple, practical, and easy to read in difficult conditions.

The M79950-0001 pairs that design with Tudor’s three-link steel bracelet and T-fit clasp, making it the most versatile everyday configuration in the Ranger family.

This example dates from 2022 and presents in Very Good Pre-Owned condition. It includes its Box, Papers, and Cards and is currently sized for approximately a 7-inch wrist.

Collector Provenance

The Ranger name has deep roots within Tudor.

Hans Wilsdorf registered the Ranger name in 1929, but the modern mythology of the model is closely tied to Tudor’s expedition-watch history.

In 1952, members of the British North Greenland Expedition were issued Tudor Oyster Prince watches for a two-year scientific mission in Greenland. Those watches did not carry the Ranger name on their dials, but Tudor later used that experience as the foundation for the Ranger concept.

By the 1960s, the recognizable Ranger visual language had emerged: black dial, large luminous Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12, and the distinctive arrow-shaped hour hand.

The modern 79950 carries those elements forward without turning the watch into a literal vintage reproduction.

Design Provenance

The Ranger works because almost everything decorative has been removed.

The case and bezel are satin finished rather than highly polished. The dial is matte black. The hour markers are painted rather than applied. Even the bracelet stays visually quiet.

That gives the watch a very different personality from the Black Bay family.

Where a Black Bay uses a dive bezel, domed crystal, gilt detailing, and heritage cues to create character, the Ranger relies on proportion and legibility.

At 39 mm, the case lands in an especially useful range. It feels purposeful without becoming oversized and works equally well on larger or smaller wrists.

Technical Provenance

Inside is Tudor’s Manufacture Calibre MT5402.

The automatic movement is COSC-certified, runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses a silicon balance spring, and provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve.

That reserve makes the Ranger particularly practical as part of a rotation. Take it off Friday evening and it can still be running when picked up again Monday morning.

The T-fit clasp is another meaningful upgrade. It allows quick adjustment of the bracelet without tools, making small changes easy as the wrist expands or contracts during the day.

From the Case File

The Ranger is one of the easiest Tudors to simply put on and wear.

There is no date to reset after the watch has stopped, no rotating bezel to align, and no polished center surfaces asking to be protected.

The 39 mm size, relatively slim 12 mm profile, 100-meter water resistance, sapphire crystal, long power reserve, and T-fit bracelet make it unusually well suited to everyday use.

This 2022 example presents in Very Good Pre-Owned condition and includes its Box, Papers, and Cards.

The bracelet is currently sized for approximately a 7-inch wrist.

BST Verdict

One of Tudor’s most straightforward modern watches, and that is exactly the point.

The Ranger combines the brand’s expedition-watch history with a 39 mm satin-finished case, matte black dial, manufacture MT5402 movement, 70-hour reserve, and excellent T-fit bracelet.

It is less decorative than a Black Bay, less specialized than a Pelagos, and arguably easier to wear every day than either.

A complete 2022 example in Very Good condition makes Case 666 a clean entry into one of Tudor’s purest modern tool-watch designs.

Every case deserves a closer look.
