๐ Case Notes
Bell & Ross built its reputation on a single, uncompromising idea: take the instrument off the cockpit panel and put it on the wrist. The BR 03 is the clearest expression of that idea โ a 42 mm square steel case wrapped around a circular dial, legible at a glance and unmistakable from across a room. Add a second time zone and the argument becomes complete: an aviation-derived instrument that actually does aviation work.
This is the first-generation BR 03-93 GMT, the configuration that introduced the second time zone to the brand's signature square case. Bell & Ross launched the original BR 03-93 GMT in 2016 as its first wristwatch to combine the square case with a second time zone, and the first-generation model carries a fixed bezel. That detail matters here. This example wears the fixed, graduated stainless steel 24-hour bezel โ the quieter, more monochromatic reading of the design, before the later black-and-red "Coke" rotating bezel arrived and changed the watch's character entirely. Collectors who prefer the BR 03 as a pure instrument rather than a colour statement tend to look for exactly this version.
Condition is Very Good Pre-Owned, and the watch presents well: beautiful overall, with very minor signs of wear visible on the case. Nothing dramatic, nothing that reads across the room โ the normal evidence of a watch that has been worn and looked after rather than stored and forgotten.
Mechanically, we have numbers rather than adjectives. On our timing equipment this example returned +1 second per day with 305 degrees of amplitude โ healthy figures for an automatic caliber of this generation.
It arrives with Box, Papers, and Cards, plus three additional straps โ one leather, one rubber, one NATO โ all of which appear unworn, and the strap-change tools to fit them. Currently mounted on a black leather strap with tang buckle, sized to approximately a 7ยพ-inch wrist.

๐ Collector Provenance
The BR 03 sits at the centre of the Bell & Ross catalogue for a reason. The BR 01 arrived first at 46 mm โ an uncompromising, genuinely large object โ and the BR 03 followed as the 42 mm interpretation that made the design wearable for a far broader audience without softening it. Everything that defines the line survives the reduction: the square case, the four exposed screws, the circular dial, the emphasis on legibility above all else.
The GMT variant is a later and more purposeful addition to that family. The BR 03-93 GMT was the brand's first wristwatch to pair the signature square case with a second time zone, which gave the line a genuine travel function rather than a purely visual one. Bell & Ross had offered GMT watches before โ the BR 03-51 GMT Titanium dates to 2007 โ but the square-cased 93 is the version most enthusiasts associate with the complication today.
Generation matters when shopping this reference. The first-generation model's fixed bezel limits it to two time zones; the later version installed a bi-directional 24-hour bezel on the same case design, executed in the familiar black and red halves nicknamed the "Coke" bezel. The two watches read very differently on the wrist. The earlier fixed-bezel execution shown here is the more restrained of the two โ all steel and black, with the 24-hour track engraved rather than shouted. It is the version that behaves most like a cockpit instrument and least like a homage to anyone else's GMT.
The caliber is a known quantity and, for many owners, a feature rather than a compromise. The BR-CAL.303 is a modified ETA 2893-2 โ relatively slender yet robust, capable of running within chronometer standards, and reasonably priced to service. Because the second hour hand is an addition to the base movement, it is set in one-hour steps independently of the local-time hand โ the classic "caller" GMT arrangement, ideal for keeping an eye on home or an overseas office rather than for resetting local time on landing.
๐ Design Provenance
Bell & Ross has never pretended the BR 03 is anything other than borrowed hardware. The brand made aviation instruments its specialty, and its designs frequently follow specifications drawn from professional users. The square case is a direct descendant of cockpit instrument housings: a round dial set inside a square bezel, secured by four visible screws, sized so the information reaches the eye before the eye has finished looking.
The dial follows the same logic. The layout is utilitarian with a clear focus on legibility โ oversized quarter markers dividing the dial, paired with bold hour and minute hands, and Super-LumiNovaยฎ on the indices for low light. Nothing decorative survives that isn't also functional. On the GMT, the additional 24-hour hand and engraved bezel scale extend the same instrument language to a second time zone rather than interrupting it.
What this produces is a watch with an unusually strong identity. A round steel sports watch has to work hard to be recognised; the BR 03 is identified instantly, at distance, by silhouette alone. That is a design achievement, and it is why the line has remained essentially unchanged for well over a decade while everything around it cycled through trends.
๐งพ From the Case File
Square cases wear differently from round ones, and the BR 03 is the honest middle of the line. At 42 mm across with short, integrated strap attachments, it covers more wrist real estate than a 42 mm round watch โ but it also stays far more manageable than its 46 mm BR 01 sibling. On an approximately 7ยพ-inch wrist, as fitted here, the proportions land where they should: assertive, present, and still comfortable to wear all day under a cuff that isn't too narrow.
The GMT function on this generation is the practical, undramatic kind. Set the 24-hour hand to home time, leave it, and read a second zone at a glance for as long as you like โ useful for travel, and equally useful for anyone coordinating work across time zones without thinking about it. With 100 metres of water resistance it is not a diver, but it is more than robust enough for real life.
The strap situation deserves specific mention, because it materially changes ownership. The watch arrives on leather with a tang buckle, and three additional straps โ leather, rubber and NATO โ accompany it, all appearing unworn, with the tools required to swap them. That is four distinct looks from one purchase, and on a case with this much visual weight, the strap is the single biggest lever on how the watch reads. Rubber makes it a weekend tool; NATO makes it a military instrument; leather keeps it civil.
Finally, the numbers. We do not describe mechanical condition in adjectives when we can describe it in measurements: +1 second per day at 305 degrees of amplitude, taken in-house. Combined with Box, Papers, and Cards, that is a transparent picture of what you are buying.
๐๏ธ BST Verdict
A first-generation BR 03-93 GMT in its most restrained form โ fixed steel 24-hour bezel, black dial, no colour theatre โ from the configuration that introduced the second time zone to Bell & Ross's defining square case.
The appeal here is a combination of the specific and the practical: a 2017 example in Very Good Pre-Owned condition with only very minor case wear, measured in-house at +1 second per day with 305 degrees of amplitude, complete with Box, Papers, and Cards, and accompanied by three apparently unworn straps and the tools to fit them. Instrument design, a genuinely useful complication, and a wardrobe of strap options in one case file.
๐ Every case deserves a closer look.
