Case #676 — Breitling SuperOcean Steelfish "X-Plus" Ref. A1739010/B772
Status: Available
Condition: Good Pre-Owned
Scope: Box, Papers, and Undated Warranty Book
Case Notes
This is Breitling dive-watch excess from an era when excess was part of the appeal.
The SuperOcean Steelfish A17390 takes a 44 mm stainless-steel case, gives it a massive 2,000-meter depth rating, adds a COSC-certified automatic movement, and wraps the whole thing in the muscular case and bezel architecture that defined Breitling’s professional sports watches of the period.
Collectors often associate this 44 mm generation with the “X-Plus” name. Breitling used that designation briefly when the larger model arrived to distinguish it from the earlier 42 mm Steelfish, before reverting to simply “Steelfish.” Either way, the important distinction is the watch itself: this is the big 44 mm, 2,000-meter version.
The black B772 dial keeps all of that hardware remarkably readable, with oversized luminous markers, large hands, and a date display at 3 o’clock.
This example is graded Good Pre-Owned. Wear is most evident on the case and rotating bezel, consistent with a substantial tool watch that has actually been worn rather than stored.
It includes its box, papers, and undated warranty book and is fitted to a black rubber strap capable of accommodating approximately an 8¼-inch wrist.
Production date is currently unknown.

Collector Provenance
The Steelfish sits in one of the more memorable chapters of Breitling’s modern dive-watch history.
The earlier Steelfish used a 42 mm case, but Breitling subsequently pushed the concept to 44 mm and doubled down on the professional specifications with a 2,000-meter depth rating.
For a short period, that larger model was called the SuperOcean Steelfish X-Plus to distinguish it from the smaller watch. Once the earlier version disappeared, the “X-Plus” designation was dropped and the 44 mm model continued simply as the Steelfish.
That short-lived naming convention is why the X-Plus label still follows these watches in collector circles.
More important than the name is what Breitling built: a huge-depth, chronometer-certified mechanical diver with the physical presence to match its specifications.
Design Provenance
The Steelfish is unapologetically a product of Breitling’s tool-watch era.
The bezel is broad and deeply articulated for grip. The crown is heavily protected. The dial uses large luminous markers and hands. The case has enough thickness to make its depth rating visually believable before anyone reads the specification sheet.
On the black dial, all of that becomes particularly cohesive.
There is very little decorative softness here. It looks like equipment because that is what it was designed to be.
Technical Provenance
At the center is Breitling Calibre 17.
The automatic movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, carries COSC chronometer certification, and provides approximately 42 hours of power reserve.
But the headline specification remains the case.
A screw-locked crown, sapphire crystal, unidirectional bezel, and substantial stainless-steel construction allow the Steelfish to carry a remarkable 2,000-meter water-resistance rating.
That is far beyond anything an ordinary owner is likely to require, but it is central to the personality of the watch.
From the Case File
This example makes no attempt to pretend it has lived in a safe.
It is graded Good Pre-Owned, with visible wear concentrated primarily on the case and bezel. That wear is part of the pricing and is disclosed plainly rather than minimized.
The black rubber strap keeps a 44 mm, 16.1 mm-thick steel dive watch surprisingly manageable on the wrist and will accommodate approximately an 8¼-inch wrist.
It also arrives with its box, papers, and undated warranty book.
For someone who wants a Steelfish to actually wear rather than preserve, the condition tier makes sense: the inevitable first mark has already happened, while the essential character of the watch remains intact.
BST Verdict
A proper old-school Breitling tool watch.
The 44 mm case, black dial, Calibre 17 chronometer movement, and extraordinary 2,000-meter rating make the Steelfish “X-Plus” generation one of the more memorable SuperOceans of its era.
Case 676 is honestly graded for its visible case and bezel wear, but retains its box and paperwork, carries a generously sized rubber strap, and offers the full Steelfish experience without pristine-example pricing.
Every case deserves a closer look.
