Case #697 — Cartier Tank Solo Large
Ref. W5200003 / 3169
Status: Available
Condition: Very Good Pre-Owned
Scope: Watch and Booklet
Case Notes
Few watch designs require less explanation than a Cartier Tank.
The W5200003 takes the essential Tank formula and keeps it exceptionally clean: a rectangular stainless-steel case, silvered dial, black Roman numerals, blued sword-shaped hands, and the cabochon-set crown that immediately identifies it as Cartier.
This is the Large Tank Solo configuration, measuring approximately 34.8 mm long by 27.4 mm wide. Those proportions give it considerably more presence than a traditional small Tank while preserving the slim, architectural character that makes the design work.
The quartz movement is part of the appeal rather than a compromise. The watch stays slim, accurate, and ready to wear without winding or resetting after time off the wrist.
This example presents in Very Good Pre-Owned condition and is fitted to a leather strap that will accommodate approximately a 7¾-inch wrist.
It is accompanied by its Cartier booklet. No presentation box or warranty card is included.
Production date is currently unknown.

Collector Provenance
The Tank is one of the foundational shapes in wristwatch design.
Its appeal has never depended on mechanical complexity. Instead, the Tank is built around proportion, geometry, and visual balance.
The Tank Solo simplified that formula further, using a cleaner case profile and straightforward dial while preserving the essential Cartier vocabulary: Roman numerals, railway-style minute track, blued hands, and rectangular architecture.
The W5200003 became one of the most recognizable steel Tank Solo references because the larger dimensions make it easier to wear as a contemporary everyday watch without losing the elegance of the original concept.
Design Provenance
This is a watch made almost entirely from lines.
The vertical brancards frame the dial. The Roman numerals follow the rectangular geometry. The minute track creates a second interior frame, while the thin blued hands add the only real color.
That restraint is what gives the Tank its longevity.
The leather strap reinforces the dress-watch character, but the steel case keeps the watch from feeling overly formal.
At approximately 35 by 27 mm, the watch also demonstrates why rectangular measurements cannot be compared directly with round-watch diameters. It has substantially more wrist presence than a 27 mm round watch would suggest.
Technical Provenance
The quartz Calibre 690 is exactly suited to this reference.
A Tank is fundamentally about proportion and design, and the compact quartz movement allows Cartier to keep the case relatively slim while providing simple, accurate ownership.
There are no unnecessary complications and no running-seconds hand interrupting the symmetry of the dial.
The result is a watch that can sit unworn for days or weeks and be ready immediately when picked up again.
From the Case File
The Tank Solo is one of those watches that works because it is not trying to do everything.
There is no rotating bezel, no chronograph, and no oversized case. It is simply a clean, recognizable design that works equally well with tailoring, casual clothing, or anything in between.
Case 697 presents in Very Good Pre-Owned condition and is fitted to a leather strap sized for approximately a 7¾-inch wrist.
The scope is straightforward: the watch and its Cartier booklet are included. No box or warranty card is represented.
BST Verdict
Pure Cartier design without unnecessary complication.
The silvered Roman-numeral dial, blued sword hands, rectangular steel case, leather strap, and slim quartz architecture make the W5200003 one of the easiest Tank references to understand and wear.
Case 697 offers that classic look in Very Good condition at a much more approachable point than current Tank pricing.
Every case deserves a closer look.
